UNIVERSITY OF UDINE - UNIUD

At the University of Udine, international activity in the field of Viticulture and Oenology is very strong. One of these activities is a joint degree in Viticulture and Oenology, valid both in Italy and in Germany, with the collaboration of the University of Applied Sciences of Wiesbaden-Geisenheim, Germany, the university of Trento and the agricultural Institute San Michele all'Adige. Students follow a mixed syllabus at all partecipating institutions. This type of agreement has already been extended to the University of cuyo Mendoza in Argentina. Now with the Atlantis project the University of Udine, which has a long tradition of internationalizazion, is moving along tha same path to create ajoint degree also with the University of Victor Segalen Bordeaux 2 in France, the Technical Appalachian State University in North Carolina USA. Excellent International relations are also kept with Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Hungary, Romania, Moldova and many others countries. Excellence in research has been achieved in the phenolic quality of grapes and wine, stabilizazion in enology, organic wine production and recently with the grapewine complete genome sequencing (published in Nature, 2007) carried out for the first time in Udine with Italian and French partners.

VICTOR SEGALEN BORDEAUX 2 UNIVERSITY - VSBU

The Faculty of Oenology has 40 professors-researchers, engineers and technicians who are involved in oenological teaching, scientific and technical research. At Bordeaux, the continuity of the work of Pasteur has been assured by the "Station Agronomique et Oenologique", founded in 1880 by Ulysse GAYON, (a student and a later laboratory technician of PASTEUR at the Ecole Normale Supérieure), which was attached to the University of Bordeaux in 1916. In 1995 it took name of Faculty of Oenology. As heir to a long tradition, VSBU is currently an active partner in numerous local, regional, national and international networks. Ever since its creation, it has fostered an international objective. VSBU is committed to maintaining a strong presence in the French-speaking developing countries by promoting cooperation in the field of health in the Indian Ocean. South-East Asia, the Maghreb and Sub-Saharan Africa. Finally, thank to its position relatively near to the border, it has excellent relations with Spanish universities, and through these it has estabilished close ties with Central and altin America. VSBU has developed a strong research and training programme in wine quality, chemistry (aromas phenolis), sensorial analysis, microbiology and process engineering.

TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY OF LISBOA - TUL

The Instituto Superior de Agronomia (ISA) was the pioneer College of Agricultural Science in Portugal (founded in 1852) and belongs to the Technical University of Lisbon (TUL), sice 1930. ISA is a Faculty for undergraduate and post- graduate studies in Agricultural, Forestry and Food Sciences & Engineering, both nationally and internationally. The studies on wine and vines have taken an important role evr since its foundation and now ISA awards a Master in Viticulture and Oenology. Although academic education and R&D have been practiced for 150 years, the Institute maintains its dynamism by keeping up with initiatives like the Lisbon Strategy and the Bologna Treaty. The current reform will be fully implemented in 2008 with all graduate and post-graduate levels within the European format. Student numbers at ISA are almost 1500, in 3 levels of studying, including post-doctoral students and teaching staf of 145 teachers-researchers. The location is quite unique; situated in the heart of Lisbon, it spreads over a green woodland area of 100 hectareas where various agronomic and forestry experimentation areas can be found. This vast green area is protected and classified by the governmnet as of "Public Interest". It plays an important part in the city's environmental balance and is a place of recreation and well-being for students and Lisbon's inhabitants.

   
 

APPALACHIAN STATE UNIVERISTY - ASU

North Carolina ranks 10th in grape production and 12th in the US in teh production of wine.Though the production of quality wine in NC is subjectto many challenges, there has been a remarkable increase in the number of wineries and vineyards over the last five years; from 2000 to 2007; the functioning wineries in the State heve grown from 21 to 64; the number of vineyards of all sizes from 150 to 400 over the same period. American varieties (labrusca, aestivalis) and muscadina rotundifolia species are common, with production of muscadina recordedfor nearly 500 years in the North Carolina. European varieties (v. vinifera) have only appeared with commercial success in the last 30 years. ASU is a comprehensive university, offering a broad range of undergraduate programs and select rrolina graduate programs. It has acquired more than $1,5 milion of sophisticeted analytical equipment to better serve North Carolina wine, grape, and naturalproduct producers. This includes first of kind mobile laboratory (WISELAB) which travels to vineyards and wineries across the State. ASU Univerisity in China, University of Galati in Romania and Johnson & Wales University in USA for research, education, and economic development projects.
